We hear a lot today about young people deconstructing their faith.
What is deconstruction, and what do people mean when they say, “I am going through the process of deconstructing my faith?”
This is my definition of what people call deconstruction.
Deconstruction is a process of rethinking your faith without scripture.
Can deconstruction of faith be a good thing?
Yes, if you use scripture as your guide. The truth is it’s normal for teenagers and young adults to ask questions, but once they step away from scripture, they are moving away from Christianity.
Why are so many young people deconstructing their faith?
The answer to this is multi-faceted.
- Young people have more access to different ideas about religion through social media.
- Young people see Christian leaders fighting one another on the internet. They hear things like, “If you disagree with me, then you are in a cult.” The fruit of this is a lack of trust. Young people are looking for authentic faith but don’t know who to believe.
- Our kids don’t know the Bible. We have safe, clean, and entertaining environments in our churches, but Bible illiteracy is at an all-time high among kids and teenagers.
What can I do about it?
How can I prepare the kids in my class for the onslaught of deconstruction?
The answer is straightforward. Drop some of the stuff you are doing and teach more Bible. Don’t just tell Bible stories. Preach the Gospel and preach with the anointing of the Holy Spirit. Go Deep. Teach theology. If it’s in the Bible, you can preach it to kids.
Teach your kids about the authority of scripture. Talk about how the Bible is a supernatural book. Highlight all the fulfilled prophecies in the Old Testament.
Point out how stories like the snake on the pole, the Passover lamb, and Jonah all point to Christ.
You might have to change the curriculum you are using or write your own curriculum.

If you are looking for a curriculum that teaches kids about the authority of scripture, I wrote one called “The Core.”
The Core is a 12-week series that teaches kids about the central and innermost parts of Christianity. I promise that when you go through this 12-week series with your kids, they will know how to defend their faith.
I want everyone to be able to purchase The Core, so we put it on sale. The regular price is $149.
Currently, it’s on sale for $99. Wow! That’s only $8.25 per week.
