Should We Talk To Kids About The Virgin Birth?

As an eight your old boy I remember singing the line from Silent Night “round yon virgin, mother and child” and thinking, “What is a virgin?”

When I asked adults the question, “What is a virgin?” they just avoided answering it. I feel like we do children a disservice when we don’t answer their questions.

Admittedly the virgin birth is an awkward subject with kids, but it is something that makes Jesus different from any other man. Jesus Christ is the righteous one. He is the only one who was born without sin, because He was born of a virgin.

This is how I teach kids about the virgin birth and avoid the whole sex education thing. (If you are teaching your own kids you could go into more detail as a parent.)

Place the nativity scene on a table at the front of class, or on a coffee table in the living room if you are teaching your own children at home.

I pick up baby Jesus.

“Can anyone tell me who this is?”

“That’s right, it’s baby Jesus.”

Then I pick up Mary.

“Who is this? This is Mary, the mother of Jesus.”

Next I pick up Joseph.

“Who is this?  This is Joseph. Is he Jesus” daddy?”

“No, he is not Jesus daddy. Jesus is the Son of God. God is His Father, not Joseph. It takes a mommy and a daddy to make a baby. One of the things that makes Jesus is unique was that He was born of a virgin. God was Jesus’ father, not Joseph. Jesus is the only man who was born without sin, because He was born of a virgin.”
