When we celebrate the 4th of July, we are celebrating not just a historical event, but a divine concept. As Americans, the concepts of free will and self-determination are part of our DNA, but freedom did not begin with the birth of the USA.
Freedom is God’s idea!
Observe the Sabbath day by keeping it holy … Remember that you were slaves in Egypt and that the Lord brought you out of there. Deuteronomy 5:12, 15
One purpose of the Sabbath day was to remind the Israelites that they were no longer slaves—they were free.
- Slaves work seven days a week.
- They have no control over their lives.
- They can’t say no.
When I celebrate holidays like the 4th of July, I see it as kind of like a
Sabbath day.
I can stop working and spend time with my favorite people.
I celebrate my freedom by grilling hamburgers, going to the lake, eating chocolate chip cookies and watching fireworks.
I think about the women and men who gave their lives so I could have the freedom to celebrate and enjoy life.
Most importantly, I think about God and how freedom is His idea. I think about Christ’s sacrifice, but it was much more than a physical sacrifice. Christ bore my sins and pain on the cross so I could be FREE.
I pray that you and your family have a happy 4th of July celebrating your freedom.
Blessings,
Mark
