I don’t want to just teach on evangelism: I want the kids in my class to be practicing evangelism.
Many of our kids are great video-game evangelists. When they play a game that they like, they tell a friend. They use their influence to get their friends to purchase the game.
My point is that kids have a lot of influence with other kids.
Why not leverage that influence for Christ?
I train the kids in my class to be evangelists in four ways:
1. Give them a heart for the lost.
This does not come naturally for kids who have grown up in church. Most church kids see lost people as the bad people— the kids that Mom doesn’t want them to hang with. They really don’t understand that there are billions of people in the world that do not know Christ.
I give kids this understanding in two ways: I teach on it, and I ask people that did not grow up in the church to share testimonies.
Storytelling is a great way for kids to connect with experiences that they have not had.
2. Be nice to the new kids.
They easiest way to evangelize is to “catch the fish in your own bathtub.”
Teach your kids to be on the lookout for new kids. I tell the kids, “Don’t clique out and just focus on your friends. If you see a new kid, go up and introduce yourself. Ask some questions.”
We train our volunteers to do this. Why don’t we train our kids? Think about it from the new kid’s point of view. Do you want to make friends with an adult volunteer or another kid?
3. Have them invite friends to church.
This is something that kids love to do.
I find it is good to teach on evangelism throughout the year. For me, an important time to each is on Easter Sunday. Many families visit church on Easter Sunday.
I always plan to preach a salvation message and give an altar call. We also have the fun things too like a black light Easter Egg hunt.
Kids love it when they see their friends respond to the altar call. Then they really start to catch the spirit of evangelism.
(If you are looking for lessons to teach, I have a four week series called Kids Need The Gospel that is good to use for Easter.)
4. Teach the kids to pray the prayer of salvation.
The prayer of salvation is found in Romans 10:9, “If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.”
There are two things that are included in this prayer:
• Believe in your heart that God raised Jesus from the dead.
• Say with your mouth that Jesus is Lord.
After teaching on it, I ask the kids to role-play and practice on each other. We keep doing it until every child knows how to pray this prayer. This gives them confidence that they can lead another child to Christ. I find the more confidence they have to pray this prayer, the more they will talk about Jesus to their friends.
To answer the question, “Can kids reach others for Christ?” The answer is yes, if they are taught and know what to do they can become great evangelists.
