5 Ideas to Stretch Your Creative Muscle

5 Ideas To Stretch Your Creative Muscles

You can get inspiration from anywhere! I hear people say that they are not creative. And I just want to scream at them, “Yes, you are! You just don’t know it yet!”

The Bible talks about how we are made in God’s image, and God is the most creative ever! He made everything!

I also think that KidMin people are some of the most creative people just in general. We work under very hard circumstances: low budgets, extra-long services, and dwindling attention spans. So we have to be creative.

I believe that creativity is like a muscle, the more you use it, the stronger your creative muscle gets. So, let’s stretch that muscle!

For those times that I don’t feel very creative I have a list of things I do to stretch that muscle and here they are:

Ask a kid! Number one on the list is to ask kids what they like. I have a two year old daughter and a five year old nephew. Sometimes, I just listen to them play and see what they like to get inspiration for Sunday.

Watch Kids Choice Awards, or other kid – centric shows. I watched it this year, and there was a commercial for Walmart, where they had a HUGE  2 story cake. They had a bunch of kids run into this cake that had random prizes inside it, like squirt guns, barbies, and a bike! (Click here to watch it) and I am still trying to figure out how to incorporate it somehow. Maybe VBS?

Go somewhere kids like. Go to Disney world! I will admit, that I am one of those weird adults who like to go to Disney world before i even had kids. I went there on my honeymoon. But I like to go there and get ideas. I get ideas about sets, skits, and how to get and keep the kids attention.

Do something creative. For me it is coloring. I got one of those adult coloring books, some colored pencils, and I just go to town. Just doing something monotonous with my hands, helps my mind think.

Collaborate. I am sure that you have creative people who volunteer in your ministry. Ask them to be a part of a creative meeting. These are specific times where you meet to talk about creative things. These have specific rules. (I will share a blog about this next week)

Check the internet. The internet can be a treasure trove of information, but it can also be black hole of wasted time. When I am looking for inspiration for anything, I like to go to Pinterest. If you don’t know what Pinterest is, it is essentially a bulletin board for the internet. You can surf and pin things to specific boards to save it for later.

What about you, what do you do to stay creative?
